Breastfeeding is the natural progression of conception, pregnancy, labor, birth and motherhood. It is a commitment to ourselves, our babies and the health of our families. Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition. Offering your newborn breast milk means a lifetime of good health including decreasing the risk of asthma, respiratory infections, ear infections, obesity, diabetes and first year infant death related to SIDS and complications in newborn illness. For mothers, breastfeeding offers protection from postpartum complications including hemorrhage and depression. Women who breastfeed have lower incidences of heart disease, breast & ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Breastfeeding is convenient and cost-effective. Families save on the cost of formula and time out of work since breastfed babies are sick less often. Yet even with all of the benefits, breastfeeding can be challenging for some women, especially in the beginning. Seeking support is the first step to a happy ending. There are many ways to successfully feed your baby. Discover your community of breastfeeding mothers to share your experience and find the guidance you need.
